I'd stick with whatever engine it has. I worked on 361's and 391's some years ago, they aren't horsepower engines, they are truck gas engines and they are very good for what they were intended, that is working under a heavy load at relatively modest engine speeds with lots of throttle opening. that explains the 2 barrel, the small cams and the heavy duty stuff in the motor, they dont turn much faster than 3500 rpm before they fall on their face but that is how they were designed.
well yeah, you need the front timing cover and balancer form a fe. which are dirt cheap i picked both up for 15.00 at a wrecking yard. you will also need a new water pump.
The engine looks nice, it shipped quick, but of course I haven't run it (still getting the parts together, have a line on a 4 barrel intake and the headers came today).
I thought I could use the old FT timing cover, because it needs the front mount to bolt into the crossmember (no side mounts on the frame).
Oh...my core fee was only $150, and I don't think they'd take an FT core for an FE (I might have asked them, I don't remember, but I know the place in town wouldn't.) I figure shipping and crating is gonna cost over $100 anyway, so it's not worth my time.
Whoa. I was reading that "the FT 330 with the cast-iron crankshaft uses the standard 352 crank, so it is also balanced internally"
How do I find out if the crankshaft is cast-iron or forged-steel? It looks like the harmonic balancer and the flywheel would fit the 390 if the crankshaft is the cast iron type.
I checked out the flywheel and the balancer. According to the book I bought they are unbalanced (so it looks like it was in fact a 330MD). Hopefully I won't have to buy a new balancer. Do I need to get the flywheel machined still?
Are you sure? I bought the Steve Christ book on rebuilding these FE and FT engines and it says that the FT 330 with the cast-iron shaft is balanced internally.
Not trying to argue, just want to be sure. This is by far the most mechanical thing I've ever done. I'm a computer guy. It's a good learning experience.
i have heard that the cast crank "could be internal" but the ones i have seen were not , knowing ford anyhting is possible. if you had pictures of that balancer i could tell you if it will work or not.
that balancer won't work. the flywheel looks to be external balance also. a machine shop will zero balance it for 15-40.00. just get a balancer and timing cover form a fe and reuse the big ft oil pan.
