OK guys. I am really bored and I want to get stimulated. I want to put a challenge out there to stump me. Anything. Well either cars or jetskis. I'm not going to play counsel on your personal needs. But I guess to be fair for why you are here - let's keep it Ford Explorer related.
Now there are a lot of you posters out there that will and do shame me (on a regular basis) with your knowledge of these vehicles. I don't want you excluded here so go ahead and keep me in check.
But I think there are a bunch of folks out there that might see a lot of this stuff, there is a lot of techincal mumbo jumbo, and they may not want to reach out. Uncle Sam wants you.

So let's hear your concerns and let's see if we can fix them!
Well I do know it's only about once every 10 years that you see snow capped hills from Morgan Hill. And then the white turns to green and in the summer the green turns to golden - hence "the golden state".
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
Also, I had sidewall punctures on 2 of my BFG Mud Terrains that were replaced with new ones under warranty but they are on the same side. The tire shop wouldn't put both worn ones in the rear and new in the front claiming liability issues. Now I thought when you rotated the tires usually you moved the rears to the front same side and the fronts to the read swapping sides. I want to run the new ones up front and more used ones in the rear. Is there a safety issue with this or is tire shop giving me a line of bull. The original tires have about 17K miles and the new have about 6K miles.
Also, can you tell me what "Argle Bargle or Fupheron" means.
You know - I did send in a reply on the tootsie pop question and the responded to me with an honorary certificate of honor of some type - I think I was 8 years old. What every my answer, I must have gotten it right. But I have no idea now - sp yes! You stumpted me on that one.
Noun 1. argle-bargle - a verbal dispute; a wrangling argument
Fupheron - come on - you're just making stuff up now.
Tire rotation - tire floatation...I had a shop tell me they wouldn't put flotation tires on my 93 Explorer. I thought, huh? I'm not going to try to float my truck across a lake Like I have seen done with monster trucks. What are you talking about? - Apparanetly anything wider than a stock size because that gives the vehicle more potential to float or hydroplane during the rain.
Oh but tire rotation is not a directiuon thing anymore - for the most part. If you have directional tires - only designed to spin one direction, then front to back is all you can do.
Today most folks go back straight up to front and then fornts swap R to L. It's OK to turn a tire around and run it backwards from before. New radials can handle this.

I know that they tell us this now and that it was not true of radials in the past. The funny part is that two people that I know (one since left) that work/ed at Bridgestone/Firestone (technical folks) won't move their radials from left to right (even with new ones that are not uni-directional). So, I stick with their advice, front to back only.
Not so say that they are right, it just seems that what tire rotation you should use for normal bi-directional radial tires just seems to be a different answer depending on who you ask... I have even seen different advice on it from the tire manufacturer web sites the last time that I went looking for that information.
Oh well...
Now my question: every time I hit a bump in my 97 Mountaineer my center console makes a jingling sound.... oh wait, never mind... it's the loose change in there
So here's the question: if you have ~190k miles on an automatic transmission and it is shifting hard (has been for 25k miles) do you replace it now or wait until it just fails (the motor is also original)?
I really like my recollection of the rares snows we got back in the SF Bay Area turning into green hills and then golden in the summer times to create the Golden State we all now envy for the price of realestate - why do you think I'm in Phoenix?
But as far as tire rotations - gee - do you really want to admit you have been talking to firestone engineers on an Explorer forum? Look out for falling debris!
Tranny stuff - It's hard to tell by what you have listed. I don't know if you have ever changed the tranny fluid and filter or if you did, had you blown out the fluid in the cooling lines too? You see - alot of variables. The A4LD tranny's seemed to have sucked but I don't know if they continued in 97. But if you really want good advice on it - start a new post titled around your tranny issue a the right folks will respond.
I am not sure who is really reading this "goofy" thread I started.

Ha ha... yeah, I know... but this was more a general tire question than anything else he he he...

Yeah, the fluid was flushed and I am pretty sure that it is just a transmission that is getting old in the tooth. Good for me is that it is not an A4LD (97 Montys had the V8 and the 4R70W) so I am just going to opt to run it until it dies. Getting it rebuilt would cost me more than what I payed for the truck when I got it about a year and a half ago. It has not really gotten worse and so I am just going to see how long it goes. I am also in somewhat of a "competition" with someone at work to see who gets to 200k first. In my case we are looking at a pretty original vehicle, in his the motor was replaced once already at 120k, so I am still way up on the "points" factor
In any case, it's a fun thread and the question was only for amusement not for serious contemplation
I have one why is it that the earth can spin around and around quite quickly but everything sticks to the ground. When answering this also answer this, when you dunk a basketball in water and spin it on your finger you get a face full of water.
