[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Jun-02 AT 03:14 AM (EST)]Hello All,
Anyone know if there's a difference between a F-150 2wd frame and a F-150 4wd frame? I have an opportunity to pick up an exremely straight low mileage 78' F-150 2wd extra cab short bed for a song. I'd like to swap the 4X4 steering and running gear in my 77' F-150 4X4 into the 78' in order to gain the extended cab.
Is this possible? I know I'd need driveline work and maybe some crossmember mounting fab. work along with mods to the floor pan. Anything else?
The biggest difference is the front crossmember, it will interfer with a straight axel. Also the 4wd frame is boxed in the front while the 2wd is not. The steering box is also different between the two and four wheel drive models.
Converting to 4WD is ALOT of work. It almost would be easier to cut the frame off of both trucks and "join" them together to acheive the desired results. It is even easier to hold your breath for a 4WD supercab. If you do decide to "make it work" before you start hacking stuff up, take carefull measurements and lots of pics for reference.

You may have to swap steering columes and the trans cover in the floor but its pretty straight forward. If you have some help and a way to lift the nose and cab assemblies. This could be done in 1 day or a weekend project. Swapping the box is just 8 bolts a fuel neck and a wire connector.
