As I am new to the Diesel engines I know a little bit about them but not much. I have just purchased a 2003 F-350 Lariat LE with the 6.0 psd. I work in the field alot for my job and my truck idles alot more or less in the winter. I had and F-150 with the 5.4 and never worried about letting it sit and idle for long periods of time. Now I have been told that letting a diesel idle for long periods of time can be hard on them. Can you explain to me what happens to them when they idle and what I can to so that I can let it idle and not damage it. Please any information would be helpfull.
first off it should not die, something is wrong. in older diesels if you let them idle for extended times in cold weather they could "wet stack" which is no good. modern diesels have automatic high idle curcuits that keeps that from happening
Yeah, that high idle made me wonder what was going on the first few times it kicked in. I was told here that is normal and jsut the truck protecting itself.
I asked the service manager at my dealership the same question. If allowed to idle a high percentage of the driving time, un burnt fuel will end up in the oil due to the high combustion ratio.
That shows up on the lie-o-meter as low speed average per engine hours used.
Highway driving helps get rid of that fuel in the oil. You can have your oil checked for oil percentage, some isn't bad, too much is. Let mine idle for an hour with the A/C on this summer, 94 out and had the dog in the truck. The high temp engine fan never even came on (checked every 15 minutes). Temp gauge stayed right in the middle.
