I'm getting a new 4V carb for my '72 F250 (stock 360, C6 automatic) and I was hoping someone out there could tell me how a stock Ford carb compares to the Holley, Edelbrock and Carter, or if there's another good choice that I should know about. Are there major mechanical differences? Do any offer better driveability, economy, or performance than the others? I'd like good driveability and reasonable economy, but I'll sacrifice some economy for power.
Thanks, I've learned a ton from FTE members already.
My Holley 4160c (Street Avenger?) was good right out of the box, but, if the Holley two barrel 500 cfm was available I would have used that instead. Putting the 4bbl on the 2bbl manifold with an adapter worked, but, is not ideal. Still, I picked up 2 mpg increase over the worn out Ford 2150 carb. No difference in power and I did not expect it with the 2bbl manifold on a worn out engine.
I forgot to mention that my F250's 360 already has an iron Ford 4V manifold on it. The previous owner, an Inspector Gadget-type guy, had the Motorcraft 2V on a Mr. Gasket adaptor on the 4V manifold. Maybe he went to a 4V at one point and decided to go back to the original 2V. I don't know. My engine is freshly rebuilt, so I'm looking forward to feeling some FE ponies. My Camper Special rig has a noticeably low rear axle ratio, so she ought to pull out with some real gusto. Does FE stand for Ford Edsel or Foot Pounds: Endless?
I had the OEM Ford carb on my truck, it worked well, but would leak fuel at gasket surfaces after the truck sat for awhile. I put an Edelbrock AVS 650 with off-road needles and seats on my 410 CID and it works well with a 1 inch 4-hole spacer between the carb and intake manifold. Am I not supposed to mention parts manufacturers?
When I yanked that 75 lb intake manifold off of my 390, I think I gained 3 mpg. that and replacing exhaust manifolds with headers i lost about 100 lbs on the front of my truck. I did notice the suspension worked better. maybe the new shocks helped too?definitely more get up and go with the 4 bbl/intake swap. Same mileage as the 2 bbl.
Another vote for the Holley. Any kind of 4bbl Holley. But more specifically a 4160 or 4150, or even better a new street avenger 4150. Right out of the box mine was great.
