[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-May-02 AT 04:04 AM (EST)]Original owner of 1979/1980 F100. Ownercard says F100ERGA2198 F 34 74
on the first line and F102 4 13 B on the second line.
My EGR is bad but the ID tag has been worn blank over the years. Can anyone convert my VIN codes to assembly data so I can find out which of the three EGRs my truck has? My problem is that It was special ordered just after the end of 79 model year so it was assembled with some leftover 79 parts and thus even if the truck is OFFICIALLY a 1980, it has driven me and my mechanic to distraction in trying to figure out which parts are which. This problem came to light when it was found that some parts didn't match the 1980+ computer files but the parts were found on the 1979 microfiche.
The standard VIN decoders don't give enough depth to help here.
There are a bunch of hand written numbers on the Ownercard that I believe the dealership put on it when thay filled it out if that would be any help. I also still have the credit card style extended warranty card which is also full of additional alphanumerics if they could be germaine too.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jun-02 AT 01:57 PM (EST)]GA2198 is an August-Sept '79 sequence for the 1980 model year. What month did you buy this truck? The last month an 79 was built was August, '79 with FG-FK before the unique serial numbers (last four digits).
Otherwise it's definately an 80 body as it weighs 1000 lbs less than the 79 because of so much plastic.
It seems the Engine and associated parts is the 79/80 composite. My mechanic and the Ford dealer say there are 3 different EGRs put on the 300 6 depending and the only way to tell difference is by the part ID tag. As I said mine is worn clean.
Is there some way to query San Jose about further info on the VIN?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jun-02 AT 06:37 AM (EST)]I can't say exactly when I bought it as I ordered it about a week after the 79s were no longer orderable due to the new model year. Mid June 1979????? Truck arrived at dealership in late August but they would not let me take posession of Truck until about Sept 28h which was the official release date for the 80 models. Or some date close to that. This is verified by my Ownercard that lists my inservice date as 9-28-79. Would any of the other numbers on my ownercard or extended service plan cards help any???
Are you trying to pass emmissions? Is it critical that it functions? The reason I ask is that emmission controls of this era were not very effective, unless you consider loss of power and fuel milage effective.
In the pass I managed to pass emmissions with a modified engine without a functioning EGR or Catalitic converter.
In CA you won't pass the visual part of the SMOG test if you don't have an EGR installed and the VECI label indicates you should have one. I have gone through this headache on my '79 300. It had no EGR and I had to install one. Yes, three part numbers came up at the part houses as choices...I ended up taking the best $70 guess I could...when you buy these they have a sheet with a long list of orginal EGR codes (nothing specific) that indicates what size washers to install in the orifices. Why do you need the number? Where you told the valve is nonfunctional - have you tested it and found this to be true? Find out if the area you live in tests for NOx. If they don't all you need to do is PICK on of the three and experiment with different size washers to get the best performance (haha) at lower rpms...long story short, I just finished mine & had it tested and passed. There's no NOx testing here...yet so the function of the EGR isn't really crucial - just that it's installed and opening when it should.
Emissions good for another year before I need to get it done again so that is not big problem. Want engine running best possible. Meets CAFE stds ok usually. Want my 25mpg back. Have hesitation, if EGR is unplugged and hose plugged the runs smooth. (had an intermittant coil that complicated the hesitation too) Work done in commercial shop so can't pay for a lot of 'tuning' the valve as they don't have the time and I can't leave the truck much. So want right one first time.
Since vehicle was MFG in San Jose, isn't there a record somewhere about the issued parts for the VIN of the truck?? Even if I required an 'eyeball' check??? How do the archive thse lists??? That's what I'm really looking for I guess.
Bear.
