before anyone tries to give me any crap, trust me, i've learned my lesson.
So we bought a 95 kia sportage from our neighbor. Decent rig, seemed to run okay. drove it for 4 days. Next day, went to start, started idled fine for about a minute while i was waiting for the missus, and then it died. acted like it ran out of gas. Cranked, started, ran 30 sec, died. cranked, started, ran 10 sec, died. Cranked, no start. To make a LONG story of troubleshooting short, (this is where its at now... ) :
New (rebuilt with liftime warranty) computer
New Coil Pack
No spark, no fuel pump, no check engine light still. bulb is fine. Main relay and fuel relays will not trip. I can get them both to trip by hotwiring them (so i have spark and the fuel pump running with both of them tripped) and it will run on primer. I *think* the injectors are not firing when it is "hotwired." The check engine light will come on with the main relay hotwired.
i want to hear your alls ideas and see if they relate to any of mine. this has been to a shop (for a month) and diagnosed by a "kia guy". niether of which could figure it out, and the two descent kia forums have been usless in this area.
My guess is that somewhere you have a break in the wiring leading to the 'puter and maybe the F/P. I'm not at all familiar with a kia, but I'd look for the inertia sensor (I assume they use one) and try to reset it. Also check for power at this sensor. In the end, I bet you're going to have to get your hands on a schematic and track it down. It could also be a poor connection; this should surface in your wiring tracing.
I blew the fi main relay on my aspire and I wouldn't start, but you already covered that. Did you check all the fuses, the under hood fuses and interior fuses? The fuses looked good on mine but were bad. I would make sure all the wires to those fuse boxes are still correctly plugged in. I'm wondering if a crank position relay would cause that, it sets the timing.
Dunno anything about Kia's (Killed in Action? anyway....) you might do some research into what signals the PCM (or whatever they call the computer) needs in order to command fuel or spark. Also, if it's got any kind of security sys., it may not allow the fuel pump or ignition systems to run if it THINKS it's in an unauthorized crank situation (not the proper technical term, but it'll do.)
krap in america, keep it away, the list goes on and on and on.....
all fuses have been checked multiple times. fuel pump works, but the computer is not telling it to turn on (if i hotwire the relays, the fuel pump comes on) crank and cam position sensors checked okay, but if they were bad they would have set an error code. there are NO codes at all. as mentioned before, the check engine light does not come on when you first put the key in as it should.
as far as the .44 goes, my grandma has a lot of old buildings on her farm the kids arent allowed to play in because some of them have old dynamite in them somewhere. thats what this kias fate may be!
Sounds like a computer if it has no spark or fuel...but you already tried that. Next guess would be power to the computer. Could be ignition switch? Could be wiring between the switch and computer? Its odd thou for it to die like it did if it was the switch or wiring. Unless the truck was running on what little fuel was left in the lines. If you could figure what wire should be hot out of the switch you could try to jump it.
Could you possibly got another bad computer?? I bought a new computer for my truck and within 6 months it went bad again. I also had a few new parts for my truck and they were bad- keyword GMC. Where did you get the ECM?? Wouldn't hurt to take it back and get another.
I started with a used computer, same problem, sent it back, got a refund. had the original computer rebuilt. came back, same problem. had the rebuilt computer sent back and tested again, still okay, returned, still no go. its gotta be in the wiring and i just havent found it yet. doesnt help that nobody makes a repair manual for the stupid thing. i do have a wiring diagram, and i have been through the rig 5 or 6 times. not kidding. my next choice is to buy a rolled toyota pickup and swap the cabs. wife has to have a four door.....
You might want to go through and unplug everything that it doesn't need to start, including belts. Then unplug and replug everything it needs to start. Have you checked the timing belt?
