Pyrometer Use

How many of you guys using pyrometers actually back out of the throttle when the temps get up?

I was just taking a look in the 7.3 forums and people seem to be obsessed with it....I honestly don't really even need one, because not once have I ever actually let up...even with the needle pegged

It all depends on if you tow or not. I know when I have the trailer hooked up I pay very close attn. to the EGT gauge when going through the White Mountains. Haven't had to back off yet, but that's because it's never been that hot outside during any of my trips.

I've only backed out once.

Generally when in Tow Safe mode I can climb steep grades at full throttle when pulling my 10,000 lb trailer and the EGT will peak out at something less than 1200 deg.

One time while pulling back on to the road up a hill after using a turn out to let traffic by I accelerated just to the point of wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear and the temp did shoot up to the point where the X-Monitor's alarm sounded at my set point of 1250 deg. I was near Big Bear, CA at an altitude of around 7000 ft or so.

I eased off the throttle for just a sec or two - litterally - and the temps quickly dropped below the alarm point. As they did I eased throttle back in and was soon up to full throttle and remained there all the way up the hill.

I probably didn't need to back out of the throttle. I'm sure the temp spike was just a transient as a bunch of fuel was being dumped in due to my acceleration from a stop.

When towing, I do spend a fair bit of time at full throttle on the 8+ percent grades on some of the local mountains around here.

I wish I knew, I have not got around to doing the gauges. I sold my camper and am going to buy a 5th wheel so I think it would be good piece of mind to have EGT and Tranny temp. I am also thinking SCT at some point and would like to have the gauges and some towing experience before I throw on the tuner. I will watch it and back out if I am seeing them increase. I am thinking with the hills we have weight of trailer there won't be many times I have to slow down. But you never know, maybe extreme tune and towing will be fun afterall :-)

I use to have my edge shut me down at 1250, but that got annoying so i set the alarm at 1450 and even still it shuts me down. I dont pay attn anymore. Although when it rides around 1400-1450 for a long period of time the engine temp needle gets pretty high up there close to the red

new to the board,

How high is too high on the egt? I just installed my gauges and located the probe before the turbo. Just wondering what temp is starting to get dangerous?
thanks

CAT uses 1400 to power down our heavy equipment. That's a pre turbo reading to protect some very expensive engines. I've heard similar #s for PSDs as well as more liberal and conservative #s.

I won't run above 1200, but I haven't seen much over 1150.

I am afraid to install a pyrometer, it may void my warranty. Wait it was voided the day after I bought it when I installed a radar detector what am I thinking! I'll take two!

I have run mine across the southwest at 1250/1300 for 2 hours and ten minutes straight (never below the 1250 mark)....never a problem with that part of the engine....

if you have good coolent and lots of air flow who cares how high of egt you get i have had mine at 1500 for 3 to 5 mins at a time . There are times that i have had the thing sit on the peg and all i have ever done is kill one motor this year but i have only had it for 9 months and ford has had the truck for half the time to fix the sick liter they say is a truck motor that is what happens when you put a blender in your engine bay .It is motors that are electric. Engines are gas or diesel fired not wired this is some thing that all must know because it is missused all the time around here. Back to the egt thing if you can handle the heat in the heads you will make more power. On the other hand the littel head bolts that ford puts in these things can not hold up for long trust me. I did not get my user name by babying my so called work truck that ford so kindly forgot half the head bolts . as for egt i do not worry all that much abought them because i do not drive hammer down for 4 hours at a time that is were you will have your fun after you try to get it fixed at the dealer trust me i spend more time at the dealer try to get them to even look at my truck then i do working it but that has all changed now we fixed it our selfs with help from our good buddy PSD you all know witch one he is .

I have read that Internationals limit is 1350 for around 5 seconds due to the aluminum blades in the turbo. Aluminum softens at a low temp. I will look to see if I can find it again.
