Can't say for certain on the 2.8L ('84-'85 BII's), but on the 2.9L ('86+), the O2 sensor is in the junction of the Y-pipe, just upstream of the catalytic converter.

Bad O2 sensor is indeed one possible cause of it running rich like that, but certainly not the only other thing. O2 sensors are supposed to be replaced periodically as a matter of routine maintenance, so if it's been forever and a day since the O2 sensor was last replaced, it wouldn't hurt to replace it as maintenance. But, as a matter of troubleshooting a driveability problem, I would start by 1) pulling codes from the computer, 2) Check for fuel in vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator (fuel in line=bad FPR), and 3) Check fuel pressure.
