Like I said, it wouldn't surprise me if it was running very lean ...

However, lopey cam with only 9.7:1 ??? Maybe that's the reason. Not entirely, but certainly a difference.

Those engines are very susceptible to intake issues. Consider using an aftermarket air cleaner that is straight across the base (not a low profile one-so the venturi effect is straightened out) and then get a 4 (four) inch tall filter. The air intake will be clearer, faster and cooler and that should help along with the careful jetting of the carb. Clearance under the hood for the taller filter shouldn't be an issue with the truck.

I heard this does not help and may even hurt a little bit. A bed cover may help a little but not much.

I could be wrong though, any ideas???

My cab-height cap enables me to get over 16MPG with my V10 - without it, I get 15.

There are differing opinions on tailgates - I just think it's the design of the truck - you can't compare an '01 superduty SB with a '74 highboy LB

I get 8 with my 390. Never better, never worse. Just 8.

Also, mine came with a clutch fan setup from the factory, from my understanding it had to do with ac and heavy duty cooling. I still run it, only with a heavy duty clutch, and I can sit in 90 degree weather all day long, and never overheat. IMHO, its the best cooling performance, however, others results may vary...
