I was looking into replaceing a motor for a friend of mine,,, and he seems to think that he has a 390 in his 76 f-250... although the motor looks --from what i can see---- to be the same as the 360? that i have sitting in my garage.. can anyone tell me what the differences are between these two motors... visual.... mechanical.. etc etc...thanks,,,,
"speed is a matter of $$$, how much do you have???"
Blocks are identical; Cranks and pistons are different. 390 pistons have a slipper skirt, cut to clear the crank because of the longer stroke. 360 is a full skirt.
Try to measure stroke through a spark plug hole.
360 is a 3.50 inch stroke; 390 is a 3.78 inch stroke. If you measure almost 4 inches or stroke, or 3.98 inches, you have a 410 cubic inch motor (found in 66-67 Mercs) All it is, is a 428 crank.
To be positive is to pull the oil pan to look for the casting numbers.
