1992 Ranger idling problem
I have been driving my 1992 ford ranger the past year or so with a bad idling problem. The truck will surge and then almost stall (sometimes does) when you first start it up. This will last for about 5-10 min and then goes away. It has been getting worse and worse as time goes on. The battery voltage indicator will show low and high voltage when the idle surges. There is also a noticable clicking from the engine sometimes associated with the surging. The clicking is really bad when running the defroster. I have had a complete tune up recently and it did nothing to help the problem. I have no idea whats going on. Perhaps alternator is bad? Battery? Please let me know if you have had similar problems or know how to fix mine. It has 185,000+ miles and not quite ready to die just yet.
Truck Details: 3.0 liter 6 cyl 5-speed XLT extra Cab.
