Just installed pyro and boost guages in my 97 F250 HD. Love the pre turbo pyro. What should I see on the boost guage ? For example, 55 mph with no load I see about 2 or 3 boost. Hard acceleration I can get up to about 14 at around 3000 rpm. then drops off as fast as I get out of it. The only mods to the truck at this time are Kwik filter, downpipe and gutted cat. Do these numbers seem low? I sort of expected to see something higher.
That's good to hear. Don't know anyone around here with a boost guage so I had no comparison. My truck seems to run great and it pulled my fifth wheel up to Yosemite last week without any problems. I even averaged 16 mpg for the 650 mile round trip. Thanks for the quick answer.
What kind of tranny do you have?
If its auto try this to see what kind of boost you CAN generate:
1. Find a fairly steep long hill.
2. Wait for a time of day when traffic is very light.
3. Lock out Over Drive.
4. Approach the hill at about 60 MPH.
5. As you start up the hill nail it and keep the accelerator on the floor until the boost gauge drops back.
My guess you'll get to around 22 lbs then drop back to about 20 or 21 lbs and stay there.
Ford has set that as a limit when the MAP sensor sees 22 lbs (approx) it triggers a defueling event.
I suspect you can do the same thing with a manual tranny but I dont know if the boost numbers are the same.
I used to get about 15psi when I had the dusted turbo, 3"DP & gutted cat. Got 17+ when I replaced the turbo. After replacing the exhaust w/ 3-4"DP & 4" pipe, I get about 20psi. Might want to talk to Dale at Tymar Performance about the gutted kitty.
Will installing one of those "boost foolers" sold by xtremediesel and ITP work on OBS pre 99 trucks to fool the MAP sensor into thinking the boost is still below 20 psi? I've been thinking about getting one, but I'm not sure it would do any good. Assuming you have gauges to monitor the real boost and a chip/programmer to get the boost increased by adding more fuel.
This has been hashed out quite abit on TDS and the OBS trucks are not supposed to defuel from an overboost, an overboost will triger a CEL, unless your getting a CEl, your are just running out of fuel. need a better fuel system.
I have hit 23 and nothing happened, both trucks. backed out of it cuz I ran out of road. so I dont think they can overboost.
I dont care what they are suppose to do all I can tell you is before I put in the boost fooler I could not make more than 22 lbs of boost now I can get around 30
