New mirrors

Is it possible to retro-fit the newer style mirrors that have the turn signal in them to my "01" SD PSD?

Yes it is possible. I've changed mine three times now. I ordered my 2000 with the small mirrors because the TTT mirrors stuck out to far to get through my garage door. When Ford came out with the telescoping mirrors, I discovered that they didn't stick out as far, so I ordered a set. That was an easy upgrade.

Then I managed to break the passenger side mirror. (I got to close to the garage door). So I ordered a new set that folds both directions. Another easy upgrade.

Finally I decided it was time to upgrade to the latest style with heat, turn signals and marker lights. That upgrade took a bit longer, but it is definitely do-able. You'll need to do a bit of wiring for this upgrade.

can you go into more detail on the wiring?

Seems that everyone has their own way of wiring. I wanted to keep everything as clean as possible. My factory wiring harness to the mirrors has the round plug, and the new style mirrors have a flat plug. Luckily had already had the Ford adapter to connect the round plug to the new flat plug. The new mirrors have 7 pins in the plug, but the adapter only had three pins in it. (thats all that was needed to make the power mirrors work) I stopped by the Ford parts counter and picked up 8 OEM pins with pigtails so I could add four to each of the adapter plugs. I installed the pins and then stopped by Radio Shack and purchased two 4 pin Molex plugs. I connected one end of the Molex plugs to the newly installed pins with pigtails. Those four pins now serve to supply power for the mirror heat, marker lamp, turn signal and ground.

I made up a wire harness for each side of the vehicle. I ran the harness through the rubber boots in the doors and into the cab. I picked up power for the turn signals in the mirrors from the front turn signal wires near the front of the vehicle. I found it easier to run a wire inside of a loom to the front of the vehicle that it was to dig through the gut of wires next to the steering column. I snipped the wires near the front signal lamps, connected the new wire, then soldered the connections and covered them with heat shrink tubing. Of course, the new wires going to the front turn signals are inside a loom to protect them from rubbing on anything.

For the marker lamps, I had an unused brown wire in the trailer brake plug harness that goes to my brake controller.

For the mirror heat (and a few other accessories), I added a Ford police package fuse block. It fit perfectly inside of the panel under the steering wheel The fuse block is powered by a relay that is activated by the ignition when it is in the "on" position. I added a switch box under the dash next to my AIC and installed switches for my mirror heat, fog lights and heater shut off valve. I ran a wire harness from the new fuse block down to the switch box to supply power to the switches.

Thats a quick run down on how I wired my mirrors. There's a bunch of others that have added the mirrors. I'm sure they all did a good job on their wiring also. Nobody wants to have electrical problems later in life caused by poor workmanship.

If theres anything else you'd like to know, just yell.

Neil, I have an '02 with the telescoping tow mirrors and am also interested in swapping them out for the new models that have the turn signal integrated. Do you know if I can buy just the mirrors themselves, or do I need to buy the entire assembly (arms, mirrors, etc)? The local Ford dealer says they are not interchangeable between the '02 and '03 models (which I think was the first year Ford offered them), but it looks to me like they are the same.

I believe you'll have to buy the complete mirror assembly. I can't say for sure, but I don't think the mirror head is available as an individual part. (But I've been wrong before) There is no problem upgrading to the new mirrors. They bolt right up and with a little wiring, you'll be looking good!
