I recently got a 99 for expedition that has a problem with shifting. it is an automatic and when you start it it does not want to shift. but if you just turn the key on it will shift into neutral and you can start it and then shift it into drive. I am wondering what could cause it not to shift from initial starting position.
Are you having problems moving the gear selector on the steering column from park and engaging the proper gear; forward/reverse/etc. That's not an internal trans problem but an issue with the gear selector or perhaps frozen linkage. Another thought is some steering columns lock in park and hinder the shifter from moving until the steering wheel is turned slightly. I have a 99 and can't remember how mine works - Monday's are tough.
The transmission is fine. The shifter is on the column and even if you turn the wheel a little the shifter doesn't release off the initial start. Doesn't matter what time of day. I think it is some type of sensor that isn't letting it release. it does release if I just turn the key onto accessory. I can start it and shift it like that. I just want to know how to fix the problem because it gets kind of annoying after awhile.
ok that clears up a few things.the actuator that keeps the shifter from being moved until the brake is aplied is starting to stick.also check and see if you are getting a brake light every time you press on the brake.you could have a problem there .
