360 woes

I've got a 360 engine in a 79 F150. The engine has started over heating pretty badly and recently it acted like it seized a bit when I came to a stop - it didn't want to recrank. I let it cool, it cranked and got me home...

I just put a new tranny in this engine and am wondering what engines would also bolt to this tranny. Will the 390 fit exactly? I was under the impression that the 390 and 360 were the same, but recently someone suggested that the 390/427 shared the same tranny and they were diff...

So will the 390 bolt right to a 360 tranny? Also are all the electrics the same on these two engines as I was first led to believe?

Basically I'm looking to bolt in either another 360 or a 390 if it will fit right in with no hassles. I'd love the extra hp as this particular engine if very weak (the 360 in it).

If I do go with the 390, will all the headers, carb, intake and all that bolt right on?

Thanks so much for you guys (and ladies) expertise. I'm totally new to this stuff...

Mike

360 woes

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-02 AT 02:13 AM (EST)] Everything will swap over from the 360 to the 390 and the tranny will bolt onto the 390 as both engines share the same bolt pattern

360 woes

Hi Mike, welcome to the board.

The 360 and 390 are part of the FE family of engines. These also include the 410, 427 and 428.

The only difference between your 360 and a 390 is the crank, pistons, and rods. The difference is the stroke 3.50" vs 3.78" The blocks are the same.

Some things to note:
1. you can convert your 360 to a 390 with a 390 crank, rods and pistons.

2. some truck 390's got different pistons to reduce compression, you should ask for specific pistons or compression ratio.

As far as headers and other addons, some fit better that others. My headers nearly hit on both sides of the frame at the same time, others require some bending of the auto linkage...

360 woes

After surfing around this site some last night, I found some of the answers I was looking for - good site.

Thanks on that info, it's something that I was trying to research last night too - crank/pistons (slipper type?)/ rods are all that need to be changed.

Tell me if I got this right - go with the 390 rods since they are stronger. Find a used or rebuilt crank on either eBAY or a machine shop for under probably $100 and the pistons should be under or around $100 also right?

Thanks.
Mike

360 woes

My question concerns a problem that maynot exist----If you order a set of headers for a 360\390 they will fit the block of your engine , but they were also made to fit the year of truck that the 360 came in , and since 1976 was the LAST year that the 360 was mfged and your truck is a 79 they maynot fit the frame dimensions , since the 351m\400 was the correct engine for a 79 model truck!!!!just courious , fd

Hi FD, good eye there... it was actually a 72 frame with 79 body work etc... only the frame rails are that old though.

Next step after all of this is disc front brakes instead of the drums that are on there.

Thanks for the concern.

BTW, thank everyone that posted on this thread. Oh and am I correct in what I need and where I should be able to find it? I don't want to sound like a totaly goof talking to anyone LOL
