Choosing a trans

I posted this in the Fuel Injection, Carburetion and Fuel System forum, but still need some input regarding a good manual transmission, 5-speed maybe? And rear-end gearing 3.55 has been suggested. Better fuel economy is what I am going after.

Being new to this site I am amazed at how much great info is available and how many knowledgeable people contribute. I have been going through a lot of what is available here trying to get some insight into the changes I need to make to my truck. First off the truck is a combination of parts 65 short stepside, 70 F-250 frame, 72 Dana 44 front and a Dana 60 rear with 410 gears. The motor is a 460 with a mild cam and 750 carb. The trans is a C6. The truck runs incredibly strong and starts easily all the time. Unfortunately with the price of gas and having to now drive 25 miles each way to and from work I need to make some changes 4-5 mpg just doesn’t cut it any more. A few of the changes I am considering are converting to efi and making a trans change. I have most of the parts needed for a manual trans installation, but have not chosen which trans. to use. I’ve got a set of new 9.00-16 35” tires I want to use. I have seen a fuel injection system by Mass-Flo (www.mass-floefi.com) that looks pretty simple, but is a bit to expensive. One of the many things I will be looking for help with is the induction setup. I would like to build something close to the Mass-Flo system. I can build the intake myself, but I do not have much experience with the ecc end of things. Transmission suggestions would be a big help also.

You could use a ZF 5 speed out of a 88 or later truck. You would have to install a hydraulic master cylinder. but you would have real good drivability with it. Otherwise you could go for a ealier model 4 speed with a manual linkage and OD.
