I read some of the topics here before registering. Lots of good info. I have a 2001 F150 Crewcab with a 5.4 in it. My problem is: After sitting overnight or a long periond of time, when I first crank it up I have good oil pressure. Then all of a sudden the oil light comes on and the gauge drops all the way down. I can rev the motor and it will come back up good. After a few seconds it does it again. This goes on for 5 to 10 times. After that, it is fine. It's as if the oil pump is losing it's prime. No tapping or any noise. Would Lucus Oil Treatment help or do I need to go ahead and replace the oil pump. If so, how much trouble is it. I know a little bit but not much of a wrench. Thanks in advance.
It sounds like your oil pressure sending unit (switch) is bad. I would try replacing it first. Keep in mind, you don't have a real oil pressure gauge.
It either reads zero oil pressure, or about half scale, which happens with
around 7PSI of oil pressure when the "switch" closes.
It sounds like the sending unit has gone bad. Or the oil pick up tube is plugged up. If you are not getting any ticking or any other noise, I would try changing the sending unit.
I'll try the sending unit. But would that also hold true due to the only time it does it is that series of times that I have to rev it up in the morning and is alright the rest of the day? I thought about the unit first but figured that if it was bad, then it would do it at random throughout the day. I thought it may be the pump losing prime after setting overnight. The sending unit is to cheap not to try anyway. Thanks.
