I have purchased a small block ford, I was told it is a 302, although after cleaning the intake manifold today I was excited to see that it had a edelbrock intake manifold. upon further cleaning I see "street master 351 W." So now I am confused, ok I was confused before, anyways, I can't seem to find any stamped numbers on the dirty block. I did find numbers on the trans tag PDG DL1 J9 Eltp CA 01399 not that they make any sense to me but maybe someone here can tell me something about it by the numbers, It's an automatic. This engine and trans came out of a BIG bronco 4x4, I need to get a tail shaft housing as it did not come with one, due to I did not need or want the transfer case that was attached. I'm wondering what I will need to do to mount this engine and trans in my 68 ford f-100. I do not think it will mount up to the frame as it had a big block 390 in it, also I'm thinking the trans cross member will have to be changed? as with the drive shaft. It will be some work for sure although I am looking forward to it, my truck has been down for the past 3 years, I've had to resort to driving my 67 chevy 3/4 ton truck, and it just is'nt the same. Any information I can get to save me some headaches will be greatly appreciated. I'm certain this is not a big deal for those of you that do this kind of thing on a regular basis, so help a guy out K? thanks, well I'm back to cleaning the engine and trans lat.
Where do I find the numbers on this small block ford, I've cleaned it real good but yet have found any numbers, I want to be sure what motor it is......HELP
The 351W is a great engine to put in these trucks in my opinion. Newer technology, good torque, better mileage than the older engines, etc.
I've heard that the FE frame stands will work for this swap but if not just hit the junk yard and find some frame stands out of any 69-79 truck with a 302-351W in it. They are easy to find.
The rear cross member will work though you may have to move it back, the holes might already be there.
If you are pulling out a straight drive tranny grind out the rivits on the front cross member so you can pull it out. It needs to be out to get the auto tranny in and out with out pulling the engine in the future.
Your exhaust will need re-working. You may get lucky and find a driveshaft that will work also.
Pretty easy straight forward swap.
