I have a 68 F-250 left after my son. I wish to take the 360 and create a 410. My local machinist tells me I need either a 410 crank itself or get a 428 crank but it has turned into a quest at best. Am considering a scat crank but don't know much about them. Any words of wisdom?
Gear Up, There is no 410 crank, as there is no 360 crank. The 410 was made with a standard bore 390 block using the longer stroke 428 crank. The 428 crank is pretty hard to come by and is pricey. While you may not get as much torque, you wont notice a lot of difference between a 410 & a 390. IMHO.
A 428 crank may cost $200.00-300.00 more than a 390.
It is more - 428 are balanced different. If I was using a 428 crank I would want the rotating mass balanced which is another 100 to 200 bucks.
I have a friend who has bought several (more than 3) 428 cranks that passed a normal machine shop inspection but showed fine stress cracks when he tested them. They are junk.
Now someone stated 390 upgrade from a 360 that's an extra .280" stroke, that's good but another reply states 390 to 410 won't notice a difference? For an additional .200" stroke if the motors are cammed and carbed the same you'll feel the difference. I must be lucky as the last 5 428 cranks three have no cracks and standard journals. 428 cranks are out there and cheap at times ($75 no cracks) and worth the extra stroke and balance fees, make it all internal.

Beemer, you are the friend I was talking about - now we have it right from the horse's mouth -
As for balancing, I agree, forget the external. Much better to pay the extra and go internal and use the parts you already have. Whatever you pay extra for the balance job will more than be returned to you in long life.
I still suggest you do a search on "428" in the FE forum - there are answers there to questions you would never think to ask!
WillyB, ya I think i'm the one we've crossed trails before on this forum, made me go out and look at one of the spare 428 cranks, it's got a IU stamp 10/10. This was from a 71 truck that was a gross polluter, never to be put on the road again. Paid $50 for it, sold everything as parts but kept the motor (blown rod, cracked block), trans, disc brakes and driveshaft. Safe to say the 428 crank was almost free just the labor pulling it. Driveshaft was like new, it's in the 68CS as the 410 twisted the early 2" front shaft, later they went to 3" front shaft. Cooling off in the valley getting towards fall?

Beemer, we have had several discussions - from pre-oilers to EFI for the FE. We talked 428 more than once, but I never needed a crank. We did discuss them. You helped with the NV4500 5 speed write-up.
But in the end I decided to be more practical. I have a 300 six to replace my 390 in the 72 F250, and am building a 59 as an economical driver. When you are living on a fixed income it just makes sense to downside - the differance between 10 and 20 MPG makes 5000 mile trips possible. I spent the summer in Wyoming, and plan on making Arizona for the winter.
WillyB, that NV4500 trans was another members install not mine as I have a C-6. Fixed income with todays problems in the US as well Cali's problems will scare anyone, take care.

The law has changed since he smoged it - you used to have to smog all 65 and up. It could change again - and most of us wouldn't pass because of modifcations.
