Installing new Head Unit

I have a question for you guys, I am interested in getting a new system, how in the hell would I go about removing the head unit, the 6-disc/mp3 in my 05 lariat screw, which has the radio controls connected to the steering wheel? Would removing that unit completely render the steering wheel controls for the radio useless? Also do I need to buy a new head unit to install an amp and new speakers in my truck? Does the Unit have an RCA Jack, or can I buy an adapter or something like it?

Thanks,
Dave

When you purchase a new head unit they will sell you the adaptor for your new radio. I have an XLT which doesn’t have the steering wheel controls - however, on my last car I steering wheel controls, and they do become useless... unfortunately; however almost all radio's come with a remote now so you won't even miss the controls.

I would keep the factory HU. This is what I did in my Focus and will do in my F150 when I get around to it.

I bought a 4-channel amp with speaker level inputs.
I bought a adapter harness and a reverse adapter harness.

Connect the adapter harness plug to the factory wiring harness plug. Connect the speaker leads from the adapter to the speaker level inputs on the amp.

Connect the speaker lineouts from the amp to the reverse plug. Connect the reverse plug into the factory stereo.

This setup in my Focus with 6x8 Pioneer 4-way speakers sounded pretty good. Not as good as an aftermarket HU, but it looked oem (which is what I wanted) and cost about $150 + speakers.

In your case I would do it just to keep the steering wheel controls. I wish i had those in my XLT.

there are companies that make adapters that will make your factory steering wheel controls work with an aftermarket headunit. i installed a kenwood in my larait and just haven't gotten around to getting the adapter for it yet
