78-79 f150

Greetings all.

Last night on the way to my son's baseball game, I spotted a truck for sale a block or so off the main road. On the way home I stopped by to take a closer look. It was a 79 F150 Ranger 4x4 Lariat with a 351c and a home made wood flat bed. It had a 8' western plow, new tires and a 3" lift. The engine leaks oil from the rear main seal but runs great. He wants $600 for it.

So my question is this: Is there anything from a 79 F150 Ranger Lariat that WON'T fit on my 78 F150 Custom? The parts I want to swap are the doors, cab (maybe), drive shafts, front seat (looks like new), and rear window.

Thanks in advance!

Kevin K.

BTW. I really only want the plow so the rest of the truck is up for grabs. Cheap.

Are you sure it had a 351 Cleveland in it?
That engine alone is worth about $400-500 if it a 4 barrel.

Or maybe you meant a 351M ?

A Lariat has tons of options that are worth a fair amount.
Grab it.

Thanks for the response guys!

Mil1lion, the guy says it has a Cleveland but I don't think he knows too much about the truck. He got it from a neighbor who told him it was a Cleveland. They could both be wrong. How do I tell besides decoding the VIN?

As for options, I didn't look too close. I'll drive by tonight again and look closer at that, the engine, and the axles.

Anything else I should look closer at?

Tanks again!!!

I'll bet that engine is a 351M, options to look for are stuff like tilt wheel and cruise control, an may be an original am/fm stereo radio, vanity mirror on passengers side sun visor, stuff like that, if the cab and doors are solid, and engine runs, and all you want is the plow, grab it up for that price, and make yourself some money parting it out.

What are you going to do with the running gear out of the truck if you get it? Let me know if you want sell axles etc.

Faltliner,

I would really like to get rid of the whole truck. The wife doesn't want another truck sittin' around, much less a pile of parts.

After all, I already have ONE truck and it's in the garage out of her way and out of site. I mean, really, we only have 5 acres and we wouldn't want it to look all cluttered with A (singular) vehicle now would we? LOL

I'm getting the truck tomorrow at noon and by Monday I will have decided what to do with it. I'll post the details when I get 'em.

Thanks all!

Kevin K.

OK. I went back last night and took a closer look. The VIN (F14HPEG4126) tells me it's a 79 F150 4x4 w/351 2bbl made in St Paul. There were two other numbers in the lower right corner of the sticker on the driver's side door post - F0143 and T0279. No idea what they mean though. Rear 9" has no data plate and couldn't see front axle plate.

The valve cover sticker is pretty clear and I think the engine family says "5.8m". Is that a 351M? What's the best way to determine C, W, or M?

I know it's a manual but didn't check how many gears it had. It has an alpine AM/FM cassette which I auusme is NOT stock. It does not have AC or cruise inside the cab, but appears to have all the cruise equipment on the engine. I'm guessing the steering column may have been replaced?

The radius arm bushings are shot. On the driver's side, where there's supposed to be a donut on either side of the bracket, there's only one on the back side, and it looks home made. This will make driving it home an adventure.

The cab floor is solid and the rest has only minimal rust. There's an old faded Ziebart sticker on the window which explains why it's in so much better shape than my 78.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jun-02 AT 09:22 PM (EST)]Those numbers on the bottom right of the tag mean that TRuck was SPECIALLY ORDERED that way.
They are the work order numbers.

It's a 351M (trust me)

Buy it ! Lariat's are worth it.

What makes you think the column has been relaced,The fact it has cruise control equipment without switches on the steering wheel?

Jermafenser

I'm in Wisconsin near Green Bay.

Dennis,

>It's a 351M (trust me)

I'm sure you're right. A 351C is too good to be true.

>Buy it ! Lariat's are worth it.

I did, and it's in my driveway now. It doesn't have too many options though. Not even an automatic tranny. I really haven't had time to go over everything on it yet. Maybe this week.

>What makes you think the column has been relaced,The fact it

I have tilt/cruise on my 78 column, but no cruise components anywhere else. This truck has the cruise stuff on the engine but not in the cab. I was just guessing that they might have changed the column.

Will do. I was there last week but couldn't find the decoder I'll look again. Thanks! Your wisdom and insight are greatly appreciated!

To check for the cruise 'brain' pull the instrument cluster out and see if the black box is mounted to the inside firewall.
It has Two connectors going to it.

With a flashlight you might be able to see it by looking under & up from the dash.

I could get you a steering wheel centre with the cruise buttons. IYI.

I'll check for the brain when I get home tonight. Thanks.

As for the cruise buttons, I didn't know they had buttons on the wheel back then. My 78 has the controls on the turn signal arm.

I might be interested in them if I do indeed have the brain. What kinda $$$ are we talking?
