Here's what I'd do:

A small toothbrush-looking wire brush and something like JB Weld. RTV won't hold the 15 or so pounds of pressure from behind.

Brush, acetone or alcohol to clean spotless, more wire brushing, more cleaning, JB Weld about 1/8 thick.

Monitor for a while.

Any ideas about what caused it to start weeping? Sure hope it's not a previous owner's lack of cooling system maintenance.

There are no previous owners. Dunno why it started. I think it was last Thrusday. I was sitting in traffic and caught a little whiff of coolant. Nothing more than that until this a.m when I crawled under to pull the oil drain plug and noticed it.

I wire brushed it this morning and coated it with some two part stuff I had laying around....so we'll see if that will hold it. If it doesn't I'll have to pull some parts off..I could only really reach it with one finger while my hand was jammed in between the starter and the exhaust manifold.

Replaced the brake pads and changed the oil while I was waiting for the stuff to cure, so the day wasn't a total loss.

stupid question- what is the freeze plug's purpose, and where is it located? i assume it has to deal with the cooling system?

You've probably got a pin hole in it. Pops got the plan......if that's what you want to do. JB is something I'm never without anymore.
You could probably get the "angle of the dangle" and everything if you pulled the wheel and the fenderwell to replace it.......which you already know will have to happen ol buddy.

I have had good luck with Quiksteel by carGo. Part #6002. Got it at Wallyworld. In a tube a little larger than a roll of quarters. Foil label with black letters.

Yeah...I know. I'll have to pull the wheel, inner fender, and the starter to get to it. Right now I just want to hold it for a while until I can get a little time to do it up right. I've driven it twice this evening...so far so good.
