Divorced transfer case shifting question.

My Highboy is the first 4x4 that I have ever owned that was an automatic transmission. On previous stick shift trucks I simply understood that a person would just step on the clutch and select 4x4 Hi range or lo range. When you shift the transfer case with an automatic transmission truck is it best to do it parked in gear, in park, in neutral or on the fly? When I bought the truck I engaged 4x4 hi and low to make sure they worked but getting it into and out of 4x4 wasn't the smoothest sounding affair. My Toyota 4x4 from the past shifted between 2WD and 4HI on the fly and was seamless. I don't have the guts to try that with the ford until I ask ya'll first. The old early Bronco that my Dad owned was a three on the column with the transfer stick on the floor. We always came to a complete stop and then shifted. I tried that with the highboy and it wasn't all that smooth.

Come to a complete stop in neutral,then move the 4x4 shifter.I had to back my truck up about 20 feet to get mine out of 4hi.Once again back into neutral.
