If you were to come out to the Midwest, you could actually see how many acres are currently NOT planted, due to government programs. Even with the set aside program, there generally is an abundance of corn production, and ethanol is a by product of making the sweetener and other products that we do eat, rather than taking the corn away from food production, it actually would not change it. It isn't all the lower quality land that is in the set aside program either... 200 bu/acree is about average any more, back when I was a kid, 150 was a lot... Even in South Dakota, where the climate tends to be dryer, 150 to 200 is the norm. It of course depends on where at, and how the weather has been for the year. Corn also can be grown in any state, but the thing that really needs to be looked at is other crops that also can be used to produce ethanol, some produce it better than corn and can be done cheaper. corn just happens to be available... the others would have to become more popular first. Even some grasses can be used to produce ethanol.
