I don't think it has a neutral safty switch, it's a manual, you can put it in any gear and start it as long as the clutch is in. I would check that starter circuit.
BTW, I still need to put the steel plugs in my trans. I got the plugs a while back but i heard that you have to at leat pull the cross member to get enough room to tap them in. Is that true?. what method do you use to put te plugs in?
The hardest part to getting to the plugs... is just taking the center console out and pulling the rug back. Be careful when you take out the shifter!!! make sure the ground on your battery is disconnected too. If you follow the article's(its in the transmission section) instructions it's really pretty simple, but it is time consuming. I used the "pull them out and put the new ones in" method.... the plugs are really simple to pull out and replace. You can see why they leak too... make sure you use a lot of silicon to seal it back up.
Heres what i've gathered after playing with it for a while... When i put the shifter back in it falls into what I think is the neutral area. I started it up last night and let the clutch out just a little bit to see what happens... and it goes foward, meaning its still in first. However, i cant seem to get the shifter back into its spot for first gear. When the shifter is in the neutral area, i cant shift it into any other gear.(obviously, but i thought it was just worth mentioning.)
There's a sensor mounted on the side of the trans that tells the ECM when the shift lever is in neutral.
If you pull KOEO codes with the trans in gear a 67 will come up "Manual lever position sensor."
Not sure what the purpose of this sensor is, unless it compensates for the load of the trans when idling in neutral/clutch out and it has nothing to do with the start circuit.
** update ** fixed my problem, turns out you were correct, it wasnt the neutral safety switch, it was just that there was a pin keeping the shifter from going back into first... the pin was spring loaded and you have to give it a good shove to get it back into place.
