Farewell Excursion

I heard on the radio that the last Ford Excursion rolled off of the assembly line this morning. Slow sales due to climbing fuel costs and it's beastly size are likely to blame. It was said that with the current fuel prices that filling the 44 gallon fuel tank averages $100. To be honest, I consider the X one of the best large trucks ever made. My dealer sold many so I will see some in for service now and again. People who own them love them.

I think its just a 1/2 ton. The only 3/4 ton full size SUV's left are the Suburban 2500's.

If thats the case Ford will let one get away. GM will be the only one offering a 3/4 ton suv.

With the death of the X there are no diesel SUV's either now because GM has dropped the idea of a 6.6 Duramax Suburban in 07. There are rumors of them putting in thier 5.0L V6 Dmax in a Suburban though, but its just a rumor.

I am sad to see it go. From the get go Ford didn't market it correctly. We get 19 mpg with ours and love it. The only negative thing is the price of fuel pushing 3.00/gallon. Record profits at the oil companies...gee I wonder why...?

Its a good car. got 15 mpg with the v-10 and im sad to see it go (i dont want to resort to buying a surburban or any other vehicle like that in the future). But do you really think its going to be gone for ever or do you think it will come back like in 10 years or so because now ford doesnt have a diesel or a 3/4 ton SUV? It looks like they now are on the bottom of the SUV market now. and i do agree with you big sky, ford doesnt know how to market anything. Ive never seen a commerical for the X. But look at all of the commercials for the superduty and the F-150, they are the most sold trucks in the country. If ford would have marketed it then it would have done alot more better and i wouldnt be sitting here writing this.Thats probally the biggest reasons y the X was killed.

Having just bought one of the last '05 6.0's (Limited 4WD) and having had the suburban in various configurations over the years, I'd have to say that for almost any circumstance, the 'burb will do everything the Exc will do. Except the Exc has a turbo-diesel and the 'burb is guzzling gas. There is more useful space in the Exc, but it never seemed to come into play for me (in using/renting/borrowing before I bought this one) but it was always the trump card to tow with the diesel.
The pump-shock of filling 44 gallons is just that: a shock, but at 15-18mpg, it's a luxury to fill up every other week rather than be feeding my out-going Chevy at 10-12mpg and a 24 gallon tank. And given the range on 2 gallons around town, you fill at 20-22 gallons, which is often only 250 miles! That's sometimes twice a week and still over $50 these days ... false economy to look at the number on the pump.

(me, preaching to the choir ...)

The first time I saw an Excursion, well, actually I saw an F250 with a V10 and I thought nothing could be more fun in a truck and who cares about 10mpg, but I wished they made it more practical for people that don't need a bed. Then the Excursion came into view and I found the V10 just wasn't upgradeable to the capabilities I wanted (no supercharger kits then) and the 7.3 diesel came into view. What a beast! What a noisy beast! I was thinking Propane, intercooler, re-programmed ... but dollars beyond my means. Finally, money has caught up with desire and here I am.

It's always sad to see a good vehicle go out of production. I've had my Exc. just a little over 8 months (used 2000 PSD) I think I'm going to keep it until it becomes a collectors car. Just like my '66 Mustang Conv.
Maybe I'll be able to recoupe all the fuel I'm putting into it @ over $3.00 a gal. Yea right ! All I can say is I'm glad I got mine to play with.
