My 77 shortbed 4x4 is now running again. I swapped out my perfectly good 351m and c-6 and put in 302 fuel injection and an AOD tranny. This conversion was not as hard as I thought it might be, but it still had its share on unexpected happenings. I also repainted the whole thing while I had it disasembled.
I also wanted to say thanks to everybody who posts on this message board!! It is neat to learn something new eveyday and it has provided me with invaluable information. You guys are great.
I am going to take some pictures of my truck and get them scanned and posted so I can show my ride off. Once again Thanks guys
I want a milage report too. I'll give her a week of driving around town to make sure I have all the kinks out, and I'll try to take a little road trip next weekend. 32 gallons of gas does not seem to drop to quickly, well at least compared to the 351m and 19 gallon tank.:7
Hello i am working on the same thing.I have a 1977/79 [ 1977 chassie with dana 60 in the rear and dana 44 in the front with a 1979 ford body]anyways i was wondering what gas tank you used [ year ]and if your truck is a 4wd or a 2wd if its 4wd what t-case did you use with the aod tranny?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Jun-02 AT 10:18 PM (EST)]The t-case was where the swap was getting fun. I used the original np203. I had to use the adapter from the np208. The 208 made the front driveshaft hang too low. It hit the tranny crossmember. The selector rod then had to be mounted to the new adapter. The big bolt in the front still worked, but I no longer had a rear mounting hole. I made a simple "L" bracket that i put on one of the bolts that holds the adapter to the transfercase and slipped a bolt and nut through the rear mounting hole on the selector assembley. Do this before you put it under the truck!!! I didn't. Now, you will also have to lenghten the to shift rods, about 1/2 inch each. Then lenghten your front driveshaft 1" and shorten your rear drive shaft 1" Be prepared to redrill your mounting holes for the tcase mount, they will be back further. also the hole in the tranny hump needs to be lenghtened to the seat.
The gas tank was a ford one from and 86 bronco. Had to make drop brackets as the tank is MUCH deeper. It is also a bit narrower and shorter. Main reason for the tank swap was because it had a new fuel pump in it and I did not want to buy a low pressure one to put outside of the tank. It never hurts to have more gas either.
Also did you check out the tech article posted on this fourm about the fuel injection swap into a 66 2wd? I found it invaluable. If anyone knows that man's email I would love to thank him personnally.
IS the np 203 the fulltime original t-case, does it have the same bolt patteren has the np205 parttime t-case and if its not trouble could you take a picture of the t-case transmission set up so i could see more what it looks like .
Thanks Brandon
well nevermind on the pics of the t-case mounting.I am getting an 1988 t-case from a bronco and mounting to the aod tranny.Do u know what size the throttle bodies are on an 1987 302 efi motor. It has dual throttle bodies on it stock but i dont know what size they are thanks for the help
Brandon
Be careful with that t-case. THe np208 hung too low for the front driveshaft. The shaft would hit the trans crossmember on my 77 shortbed. That is why I went back to the np 203. Sorry I have been so slow on pics. Been so hot here we have been shingling early and shingling late and doing everything else in between.
I don't know about the size of the throttle bodies. If you are using the speed denisty set-up they have the double intake. The mass air uses the one intake.
31 inch tires and 3.50's . Very rough estimate on mpg is 13, all in town driving. I've also had a heavy foot seeing how the engine and tranny feel
I'm going on a driving up to Omaha this weekend so I will be able to give you guys a rough estimate on the Highway milleage. My 351m and c-6 only got about 8 mpg around town.
If you are getting 15 with your current setup I wouldn't mess with it. That is pretty damn good.
