My speedometer wasn't working in my '75 f-250. I went to a junkyard and got a new instrument cluster and installed it. It still didn't work. I think it might be the cable that runs from my transfer case to the speedometer. Could this be the problem and is it hard to fix. The cable that is on it now fell onto my exhaust and burned up a little but did not go all the way through to the cable. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
It is your speedometer cable. any burns or kninks in it will make it not function right. The speedometer cable is not hard to change. There is 1 bolt that is located on the transfer case and 1 bolt located behind the speedometer gauge.
They are usually reasonably cheap in the $35-45 range. I'd go to NAPA if I were you. Better to play it safe and get a new one than get one 25 plus years old
There is also a plastic gear that can get stripped in the transfer case. You should be able to pull the assembly out of the transfer case that the speedo cable screws to and check the plastic gear.
I went to the website from where i got my steering wheel and they said you can just get one person on each side to pull like hell and it will seem impossible but it will eventually just pop off. Well i went to my truck and just pulled on the drivers side with a couple of tough tugs and it suddenly came right off. Didn't mess up anything on the column.
