My trans needs work. I think a shifter fork is broken. 1st, 2nd and nuetral are all 1st. I might fix or get better one. I would like E4OD. How much changing needed? Are they tough? I can get an '88 302 auto truck cheap for parts. Are they two different?
My Truck; '96 F150, 300 I6, 5spd, 4x4, reg. cab, long bed
Donor Truck; '88 F150, 302 V8, Auto, 4x4, reg. cab, long bed
I think it may be a Mazda trans, dont really know them. I know the T/C is a Borg/Warner. Do they interchange? I would like lower 1st and reverse. 5th is ridiculous. I have 3.55:1 rear. Brand new 31x10.5x15 BFG A/T KOs. Any help is great. Older stuff was easier.
Your truck has the M5OD mazda transmission. It would be difficult and expensive to change it over to an E4OD, which is a computer controlled transmission which would require a standalone computer for management or other means to control it.
You could just change the shift forks in it...sounds like what the problem is...
That 88' might not have the E4OD, it could have the AOD which is a non-computer controlled transmission that could go in...never done it so I don't know the specifics...not much of an auto tranny guy.
Another option is to swap in a ZF 5 spd from an F-250 or F-350 in place of the mazda. It has a low first gear and slightly higher 5th gear (maybe 75 rpm lower on the hwy). It's also a heck of a lot stronger. I swapped one in my F-150. It would be a lot easier to swap in than an automatic.
The 5th gear ratio is .80 on the mazda and .78 on the ZF. I don't know why you feel it's "rediculous" but that's normal...31s and 3.55 gears are a little high of an axle ratio/tire combo so you're final drive ratio is a little high meaning your hwy RPMs are going to be a little lower. If you swapped in a set of 3.73s it would bring the hwy RPMs up but I wouldn't think it's worth it.

At 65mph it wont hardly accelerate or hold on small grades. I have to do a lot of clutch slipping to back up my driveway, or put it in 4wLow. I guess Check into gears(cringe) or find a later model for parts. I have always loved the flexibility of my autos. My first manual was my 92 GT. I think its great in a sporty vehicle, but It just seems difficult in a truck. I guess its what your used to. I drive a school bus thats auto, and when I drive a manual it seems like such a strain to get going. I would think if you had gobs of torque or a light vehicle it would be best. I might also look for an F250 with a 460 auto. I'm a power nut. But I dont like rattles, pings, stanky smoke, and greasy fuel. Thanks for the info.
