Rear disk conversion ??

I have a 1968 f100 and Im doing a full disc conversion.
I puchased the front end from a 1978 f150 in the bone yard for $100 and the eldorado calipers for the rear, also 78 but I was wondering what rotor discs too use for the rear disc?
Will a set of 78 ford front discs work?

Thanks
John

That year of front disks won't work, the disk and hub are cast as a unit. You need a disk that is seperate from the hub. If you are making your own brackets, use a front disk from a late 80s 4x4 pickup, I believe those are a seperate disk. If you are using brackets from a kit, they should recommend a rotor to use.

The type of rotors you will use depend on who you get the caliper mounting brackets from. I am finishing a disc brake swap on my 67 Bronco with the same calipers. I got the kit for the rear from Bronco Graveyard and it came with rotors. I think that 80-86 Jeep CJ-7 will work. BC Broncos has a kit too and that's what they use, and I think you can get it without the rotors.

FYI: I think you need the 79-85 Eldorado Calipers. 78 may be the same.

I would leave the rear drums. Some say rear drums are best if you tow things anyway.

I have heard that front f100/150 rotors will fit with some grinding on the back side. I think these are two piece? I don't know for sure.

I ordered the 78 Eldorado calipers from Advnaced autoparts.. I'm still waiting for my new front rotors, calipers, bearings, and spindles. When they arive and I pick up the calipers I will check if grinding "the center" will work. I saw somone else on the web tal about putting the car on stands, then in gear and using an angle grinder. thats a bit on the stupid dangerous side. I have a 10" lathe and planed on replacing the studs anyway. I just hope the axle will fit in the tailstock. If that doesn't work I'll try the late 80's early 90's Rotors.
Thanks
John

Can you give me more details on the this conversion??? Are you using Caddy Eldorado Calipers? Where do the caliper brackets come from?

Thanks
David

David,
Everything I’ve read says Cadillac Eldorado Calipers from 73-79 are the right size for the f 100 – 250’s 67-73.
Here is the link for the Brackets and hardware depending on how you choose to attach them

http://www.aa-mfg.com/pdshop/shop/category.asp?catid=3

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

This page shows a guy doing the conversion

http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoRearDiscs1.htm

<o></o>

He welded the brackets to the tube but I have a brand new plasma cutter and since the brackets are cheep I’m going to buy them and copy the pattern. Then I can resize the part that attaches to the tube so as to make it completely bolt on without the tube clamps like they sell. I don’t think welding to the flange is really amateur in appearance. Also the clamp on hardware looks clunky. Re-fabricating them and bolting of them on looks clean and professional almost factory. The whole thing about this conversion is the cost is a fraction of what a kit will cost and just as capable. Summit and Jegg’s for the adjustable metering block. They are around 30$.
The only thing thats a bit grey for info is the rotors to use with the cadi calipers. So far as I have found out the Rear Rotors from a late 80's- early 90s' should work well.

thesprocket26 posted :"I have heard that front f100/150 rotors will fit with some grinding on the back side. I think these are two piece? I don't know for sure."
If you use front rotors they'ed have to be 4wd type as 2wd hold bearings and seald for the front spindle. Rears are mor simplified. and the wheel studs stay on the axel when they are removed.
I started this post to find the exact year rotor I need so I am still searching.

Went to Autozone for the calipers and the Rotors. I picked up the replacement 78' Front rotors and calipers. But there was a foul up on my order for the calipers and they only had the passengers side. I inspected the thing closly and found the retaining Nut for the Ebrake bracket (Bracket doesnt come with the caliper) was bent into an oval and wouldnt thread.

They have Bearings so I asked to see the 98 ones and they seem to fit the caliper "ok". I will see when I get to dismantel the whole mess.
49 willard -- I didn't get to dissassembling yet but I will let you know.

Bracket doesnt come with the caliper

As I previously said the Eldorado calipers came basic no E-brake bracket. Also there is no cable lever bracket, no brake hose fitting or banjo bolt, and no Bolts. Ya know the two that hold the caliper to the axel. The bolts I figured I might have to pick up but the rest I hoped would be there since I don’t have Eldorado cores.
One of the $78 ford front calipers cost the other was just 12.99. The rotors were $27 each. I picked up the 98 ford 4wd front rotors for the rear as the 88’s were just like the 78’s, and were $78 for the pair. The Eldorado Calipers were a bit pricier, $256 for the pair.
Combine that with the $100 78 f150 front-end. Additionally I have to order the pair of brackets ($14 for the pair) and the new adjustable proportioning block for $35 from Jeggs. So far for the conversion I have spent $628 and I still need the absent hardware and to install new brake lines. If I had been able to afford the kit it would have been at least $1300 for a comparable brake system mostly because the front clip would be a big expense to swap in a mustang 2 set up. At least this way everything is over the counter for repair and maintenance.
Does anyone have a preference for brake lines? And what size tubing – should I stay with the stock diameter or are there any benefits to changing it? In particular should I change it since now I’m converted from drum to disc? Also does anyone have a source for the Cadillac brake hardware that I need to pick up?<O</O
Thoughts?
John
