This all started with the water in fuel light on. I drained the fuel seperator and replace the filter. Still running rough. So I drained the tank as good as I could without removing it and replace with new diesel fuel. Still no help.
I took my vehicle (2000 7.3L power stroke) to a dealership and they retrieved codes PO272,278,284,308. They informed me that the fuel system was dirty, so I ask them where the dirt was coming from. Answer was 'most likely the tank'. They wanted to replace the whole fuel system. So I just had them drop and clean the tank. This did not eliminate the problem of rough running.
Not real confident in the Ford dealerships trouble shooting methods so I took my Excursion to another place (diesel mechenic non-Ford) He pulled almost the same identical codes PO274,272,278.284. Informed me that I had 3 bad injectors #4,6,8. I had him relace all four injectors on the left bank and the uvc wiring, and he retested with results showing now #5 (PO275) starting to fail. So after spending $1500 on the left bank I decided to let the right bank #5 go until I could regroup the shock of this expense. The vehicle runs at least 98% better. Still may get the other side fixed in the future. It just bugs me that the Stealership could'nt have told me that I had bad injectors instead of bull****ting me with fuel problems.
What's your take on this ????????
P.S. I have also installed a Dahl fuel filter/water seperator in line before the pump to try and eliminate the $3.00 a gallon water I got.
If your fuel system is that dirty I would change stations for starters. Try to find someone that has some Bio-Diesel and run a few tanks through it. B100 will clean it out GOOD! Be sure to change your fuel filter pretty quick after you run it since it will gum up a fuel filter big time after the first couple tanks. Good luck.
I'm not quite sure how failing the contribution test translates into a dirty fuel system either. Probably good that you left when you did.
$1500 to replace 4 injectors and the harness is a pretty good deal considering the injectors are almost $300 each. Sounds like your new mechanic treats you right.

Yea, The only problem I have with the whole situation may not be with Ford, but with the technician. Some people just can't pour sand out of a boot with the instructions written on the heal. But they still got me for $600. I'm in the process of writting a letter to the dealership and Corp. Not that it will do any good, but it will make me feel better. Three hundred for a diag. that they can't read is kinda steep. I will never return to Ford !!!!!!
