I haven't had a lot of luck with a heat gun as there is too much risk in damaging the actual paint if you get too close or leave the heat on one spot for too long. I also found that the heat gun will lift the decal and leave a gooey, gluey mess behind which still needs to be removed with glue stripper, gas or whatever works. The best thing that I have found so far is at the autoparts store. It is called a decal remover and resembles a big round eraser. It has a mandrel built right into it and you just load it into your drill and then at a fairly good RPM you "erase" the decals or pin stripes or whatever your trying to remove. It worked very well, removes the decal and the glue, does not harm the paint skin under the decal and lasts for a very long time.

Just my .02

Cheers!

Mike

Set the heat gun for a low setting.. typically they are 800W and 1500W. Removing decals with a heat gun is easy... but as MRL123 said if you leave the gun pointing at one spot the heat will bake the paint.

Once you peel the decal off, let the glue dry a bit, then rub it off with your fingers. Once you bake it with the gun, it's lost 90% of its stickyness so rubbing it off is easy, though time consuming.

3M also has what they call an eraser that you can chuck into a drill and use it just like a pencil eraser. Best of all it won't hurt the paint.
