Last night I went to take my son to soccer practice which luckily was only a mile away and the ABS light came on as I was pulling out of the drive way. After a few hundred yards I noticed that it didnt change into second very smoothly. I got a bit of a bump like it dropped the clutch. This got me a bit worried but I kept going. Just befrore i got where i was going I noticed that the speedo wasnt moving either.
I will be picking up a new VSS tonight and probably installing this weekend. Is there anything I need to know? Is there any reason to think that this is not the VSS? I am pretty sure my haynes covers the installation...
the install is a piece of cake. good chance its the VSS its a common problem on ford trucks. if just the ABS light was on it could be many things but along with the shifting problem and the lose of your speedo i would say a bad VSS is a good bet.
It is located in the top of the rear differential, and adds input to several vehicle functions, namely the ones listed in the first post. Speedometer, automatic trans. shifting, and ABS functions. Sometimes only 1 will show up as a problem when the VSS goes bad, or all 3 will show up. It is held in by one bolt, and takes about 10 minutes to change. A very common failure, IIRC, it only costs about 30 bucks.
One very important thing ! before removing the the sensor.
Clean the entire area of dirt and scalely rust.you don't want any thing to fall into the rear diff.
Also if when you remove it and it is coverd in tiny grayish material, think about a fluid change with recommended friction modifier if you have an ls unit.
I put it in last night and it without issue. The old VSS came out covered in it what looked like chunks of metal but turned out just to be metalic 'gunk' that had formed into peaks. I wiped the gunk of making sure that there was not large peices and there was not.
The other tip that i found very useful was to make sure that no debris fell down into the dif. If i had just pulled it out something would definately have gone in there.
