I am getting the feeling they just used whatever was in the parts bin. The '77 F350 I bought had the narrow frame and a 70. A '79 SC with a 460 had a 60. My '78 Camper Special has a 61. Guess if and when it quits raining, I will go grub around in the wrecking yard.
I guess what I'm trying to say is- is a Dana 44 strong enough? I run stock 16" tires and wheels. I don't do any Hard Four Wheeling, but this is Alaska and the roads are tough in some places and there is always the possibility of getting stuck. I'm not terribly hard on trucks though, Mostly driving on gravel roads. And with the weight of the truck, is a 3800 lb axle going to limit what I can Haul?( I've had 4300 lbs on it before, including trailer).

Before I put the 6.9 Navastar diesel in my '75 Highboy, I would bet I pulled 16K lbs of goosneck trailer and contents. Then I ran the diesel (~1100 lbs) with a large pipe bumper and a 8K lb Ramsey winch for 90K miles without axle problem. On several occasions, I attempted to pull stuff in 4x4 that the truck could not move, to the point of almost tearing the center out of the clutch disc (while jerking on it). The Dana 44 lived through all of this.
