I have a 1970 F-250 Ranger XLT Camper Special with a 390, a New Process 435 4-speed, and a Dana 60 with 3.54 gears. I was just wondering if anyone knows how tough that driveline is. I believe the clutch is the original one that came with the truck so I figure that might be a bit weak. Thanks in advance!
That's all bullit-proof hardware. I suspect some Dana 60s came with limited slip and some did not. You might be able to tell by looking at the tag on the DIff, if it is still there.
If the original was limited slip there will be a warning sticker somewhere - warning you not to operate the truck with only one rear wheel on a jack. Sticker might be in the glove box, but on the larger trucks it was on the floor pan between the seat and the driver's door.
Hmmm... A 390 with a 4-speed. Here's a 5 step process to determine if you have a posi or not:
1) Quit looking for tags and stickers. Who knows what the previous owner swapped in or out.
2) While the truck is running and clutch depressed, point the shifter to the little "2" on the handle diagram.
3) Rev engine to 3000 rpm.
4) Dump clutch while mashing gas.
5) Return to observe your damage. If there are two black streaks on the pavement, 2 ruts in the gravel, or 2 mud streaks in your boss's lawn, it's a posi. If there's only one, it's open.
