73 thru 79 4X4 steering Question
I have a question that ya'll may be able to answer. As I understand it; the 73 thru 79 4X4 trucks generally came with one of two power steering gear boxes. One was a four hole that mounted to the outside of the frame rail, the other one is a three hole that also mounted to the outside of the frame rail. The three hole is called an "integrated" power steering box. What is the main differences between these two boxes and what does integrated mean?
I have a 67 4X4 with manual steering and am wanting to use the 73 - 79, three hole, power steering gear box, but need to get all of my facts correct to make sure it will work as I need it to.
Thanks for any help, if you can.
Some fords use a control valve assy on the pitman arm or a drag link, which is external, the corresponding box is actually a manual box. When you turn the wheel you put pressure on the external valve and it in turn sends fluid to an external piston that pushes on the steering.
The internal is a better system if you have room on your vehicle for it, it is bigger than an external setup box.
