1996 Explorer ABS Hydraulic Control unit replacement
Ive got a friend with a 1996 Explorer. The anti lock hydraulic control unit was diagnosed as bad. The brakes pulse rapidly during normal gentle stops. When the electrical connector is disconnected the brake warning light goes on but the brake pulsing stops.
I have gotten a junk yard replacement and wanted to know if there are any special steps I need to do to replace the ABS hydraulic control unit?
Thanks for your help.
If the ABS only activated just before a complete stop on dry pavement, between 5 to 0 mph. At any other time the ABS brake does not pulse, this fix is for you.
The problem is caused by rusting front ABS sensor mounting surface causing the ABS sensor to lift up slightly. This a known problem with this type of ABS sensor inside the wheel hub design. GM has issued a bulletin for this problem on their 4x4 trucks. Same design as Ford. The fix is just to remove both front ABS sensors and clean the mounting area with wire brush, apply high temperature grease on the surface to prevent rust build up. Put the old ABS sensors back in. That should fix the low speed ABS activation problem.
If you do a search on low speed ABS activation on the Internet, you should find this is a common problem.
Many people wasted money on replacing the ABS sensors instead of just clean the mounting surface and put the old sensor back. Both of my 95 4x4 Explore and GM 97 AWD van had the same problem and the fix was good.
By the way, this problem does not cause the ABS warning light to come on. If the ABS light is on, then it is something else.
