Hi, I was hoping someone could shed some light on a problem I am having with my new tires/wheels. I just bought new Kelly Springfield "Ridge Runner Radial APR" tires for my 97 F250HD (looks like 96) At the same time I purchased aluminum wheels from a 92-96 F250 for my truck. Before installing the new tires/wheels the truck handled great empty or loaded. With the new tires/wheels it travels ok going straight but is a real handful going around turns or if you move the wheel back and forth slightly. It feels now as if it were a few tons over weight with low tire pressure, literally swerving its way down the road. The instability is made worse with weight. The truck came with steel wheels, the "new"aluminum wheels came from a friends truck who had no trouble with them and the tires are the same size as the previous ones (265/75/16). I have checked all lug nuts for proper torque and the tire pressures are all at 60 psi even. The max tire pressure for the tires are 65 and the rims 60. This problem just arose with the new tires and wheels, my guess is it’s the tires, but would really like some input, thanks
If the new tires are P rated its the problem, if they are weak D rated tires they could still be the problem. Side walls flexing to much on turns. If the tires are LT with enough load range for the truck, then I would say take it to an alignment shop.
By the way 60 psi is the low side for D or E rated tires. Hope this helps
Hi guys thanks for your imput on the tire problem, The tires were a "d" load rated tire, the reason I only put 60 lbs of air in them, is the limitation stamped on the factory aluminum rims.(60 psi max) After much frustration with the "ridge runners" I took them back and upgraded to an "e" load rated tire (10 ply) with great improvement, the truck now handles nicely, just as it had before, empty or loaded. I can't really add much about the wheels being "hub-centric" or not but the bolt pattern did change slightly (just enough to prohibit swaping) with the newer superdutys, mines one of the "left overs" that was sold as a "heavy duty" 1997 but looks and shares parts with the 92-96 group of trucks. It may be worth noting that ford sold a regular F-250 in 97 that had the body style of an F150(remindes of the 7700 f150) I would not be surprised if this truck had the newer bolt pattern.
