i have a 300 6. i literally kicked off the tail piep due to it breaking. it has a nice lower sound now. try glass [pacs and a dual exhaust. stright pipes, or just to annyo everyone remove the muffler completely
If your '78 has the EGR installed, pull the vacuum line going to it and stuff a golf tee into and see what "tweaked" increase in performance you get. Check into the inline forum, there's a fella with a 240 with the same questions.
I almost bought a 78 with a beefed up 300. It had a 4V intake with 600 CFM carb, headers into dual exhaust, cam, roller rockers, and high compression pistons. I don't know the ratio, or the type of mufflers, but this thing sounded like a top fuel car at an idle! It was one of the best sounding engines I ever heard! There was so much compression that you could feel each pulse from the exhaust! It apparently had over 300 hp, and I believe it! Just wish I would have driven it! I have pics of the truck and motor if anyone wants.
