This is more of an annoyance than a real big problem, but one day my steering wheel stuck, so I jerked it and heard a SNAP. I tore into it, and replaced the blinker mechanism, and all the peices I broke. Now my Left Blinker WON'T turn off....EVER. I finally took the bulb out. It is just the front blinker. The back one works correctly, but as I said the front one won't turn off. Even when I turn right, it stays on. Any ideas? I really honestly have no clue. I have checked most of the wiring except the wiring that is actually in the column itself.
That's wierd. The rear works fine, the front stays on all the time? If you have a continuity tester, there's a junction on the driver's side at the firewall to test what the output of the column is doing...does the light actually stay on or does the dash indicator light stay on? Where's Sparky?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 01:56 AM (EST)]did you replace the whole switch or just the canceler? if you just replaced the canceler i bet one of the contacts is bent out of line. if it was the whole switch, was it a new one or a used one? does it flash all the time or just stay lit. does it blink like it is supposed to? did you cut the wires, or did you pull the plug apart?

All good questions that need answers so we can figure out the problem
I only could replace the blinker cam as I could not get any of the other parts, either from the parts store or the scrap yard. The blinker both on the dash and on the front of the truck blink, blink, blink... constantly. As I said until I took the bulb out, now only the one on the dash blinks. I will check that continuity thing this week.
The turnsignal switch is a rather complicated piece with several electrical duties all in one. You have the electrical section for the front lights, and one for the back lights which has to deal with the brake signal at the same time. I think the switch is either damaged, or I did have a car one time that did this and it was because the actuating and canceling mechanism was leaving the switch in some sort of weird mid position-not moving it completely to the off position.
All,
This is a Ford truck classic. The "grinder". It was my first negative experience with a ford truck. It happened almost twenty years ago.
1. You must replace the blinker assembly. Purchase from AutoKrafters.
2. You must replace the C-clip that holds the column down. You'll see it once you unbolt the:
a. Steering Wheel
b. Blinker assembly
When the blinker assembly is unbolted it will spring towards you about an inch or two. You will be able to see the C-clip at this point and have to dig it out. I use an electrical test light probe to get a hold of it. You will have to disconnect the electrical gang plug to let it slide up over the column shaft. Be patient. Count your fasteners and don't forget any of them. When you put the new blinker assembly back on, loosely fasten the nuts to the "T-bolt and push the assembly back on to the column. Hold it in place and tighten the nuts a little at a time. You'll know when you've got it right because it will feel tight and not wobble.

Agreed: The blinker is known to do some very strange things. I had to hunt high and low for the right one for my 76. I finally found one out of a Ford Econoline van. The later 70's trucks had a different cam and switch assembly. I stay away from buying new stuff, cause I hate waiting for shipping! (and paying Canadian duty!)
The switch I put in fixed the weird problem I had. One brake light wouldn't work, or the hazard on that same side. The switch fixed the problem.
