Starting Problems

I'm a Ford guy but have mainly worked on '65 and newer Fords. Don't know a lot about the Y-Block. Anyway, my father-in-law has a '55 Ford grain truck with what I assume is a 239 in it. He wanted me to take a look at it since it would no longer start and was running rough. I looked at it and found that the insulation was completely gone from the plug wires...just had bare wire hanging out there! So I put in new points, condensor, plugs, wires, and a new battery. It'll start fine when it is cold and runs pretty good but after the engine warms up it'll barely crank and won't start. The battery cables seem to be fine (taking my ohmmeter out next time) so I'm thinking the starter is bad. It is caked with oil and dirt...valve cover gaskets have been leaking for years. What years and sizes of engines will have interchangable starters? This truck is still 6 volt...had to put a new battery in it when I started working on it.

Thanks,

Derek

Does the engine die when it gets hot? Or do you turn it off and then it will not start?
