1976 F150 4x4, 460 cid eng, NP 435 trans. Should this condition go unfixed? One flywheel bolt broken off in the crank, but the other 5 five doing their job. You have to be crazy. (Crazy people aren't afraid of anything).
It's no easy task to remove the tranny to replace a broken bolt, but it might give you peace of mind. Look at it this way: You get a chance to inspect your rear seal for leaks! The thing is, how on earth did this bolt break on its own like that? I never heard of such a thing on a flywheel...

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jul-02 AT 01:15 AM (EST)]this doesnt have much to do with your problem but i like to tell the story.i had a vibration that i couldnt get rid of above 55.it wasnt very bad but enough to notice.my buddy rebalanced my new tires, tried new different tires and still couldnt get rid of it.anyway a year later i busted the exhaust manifold bolts and this shop pulled my motor and found that the flywheel had broken off and wedged itself back on.and i thought that only a couple of teeth were wearing.put a new one in and the vibration was gone.unfortunately the next year lost compression in 2 cylinders on the same side and shut it down. 270,000 original and didnt ever use oil.it is still sitting and im looking for someone to rebuild it for me.it is a 390 i would fix it
my $0.02 I would use a bolt extractor (tap/die) to get it out. I would also replace all the bolts, because if this one broke, then the others are subject IMHO.
must have been a real Gorrilla who tightened them down. they have tensil strenght of almost 85,0000 lbs.
by the way, dont be a gorrilla when you put the new ones on. Get your torque wrench out, and tighten according to your manual.
