Tow package differences

Can anyone list the specific differences between the standard tow package and the heavy duty tow package on an 04 Expy? I'm aware of the tranny cooler and the seven pin harness. Any other differences? For almost a 2000lb increase in capacity it seems like there would be some other structual differences.

Also, what's the benefit of a 7 pin harness? my boat trailer hooks up fine to the standard one. I'm also thinking about adding a tranny cooler.

The 7-pin allows you to utilize a trailer brake controller to control any electric brakes which may be on the trailer.

Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package $350.00

- Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver
- Wiring Harness w/4 & 7 Pin Connector
- Heavy Duty Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler
- Heavy Duty Radiator
- Electronic Braking Wiring Kit

Would it be different gear ratios?

I believe the gear ratio depends on the truck. If 2x4 the gear can be either 3.55 or 3.73, your pick. If it is 4x4 the gear is only 3.55 because of the front axle.

the expy rated to tow 8900lbs is 4x2 and has the 3.73. also a l/s rear is a real help for towing. also do you have the 4.6 or 5.4 engine. the 5.4 has the better rear end and tranny. it has a 9.75 rear compared to the 8.8

I have the Advance Trac with the tow package and the 5.4. I went and got a brake controller and with the pre wire for that it was a breeze. The only problem I can complain about is no matter how light the trailer, you WILL feel it back there. maybe I got spoiled by my old SD, but even with a 6x12 landscape trailer empty, you can easily see a 2-3 mpg difference.

I'll second that! I just pulled my 3K EMPTY horse trailer around and mileage went down to single digits and I felt everything!

That was the main reason to go back up to an Excursion. That thing doesn't even know it's back there...even with 2 1100# horses and all their tack.

I pull a 6,000lbs. travel trailer and get an avg of 9.8 mpg. This was for both down and back from CT to Disney earlier this year. I have a 03 E.B. with the HD tow package (3.73, 5.4, tranny cooler and bigger radiator) I believe the frame went through some big changes in 03 making it stiffer and that increased its tow rating. I'm not sure of the diff between standard tow and HD tow.
Monsta is right about feeling it but thats the trade off. The truck rides NICE (no truck ride) without towing (which is most of the time) and has all the "off the line" that I'm looking for when towing.
So, if you do LOTS of high cap towing then maybe the Expy is not for you. BUT if you are towing a boat here and there it could be a good fit. The 7 pin covers all the brakes, lights etc that you would find on a heavy trailer (like a bigger camper)

The 04 Expy came with a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver standard. And I believe it has a tranny cooler standard as well. With the tow package, the rating of the hitch was increased to class IV and the radiator and tranny cooler were upgraded. The only rear end ratio available on the 04 Expy was 3.73. Unlike the 03 though, the open diff was standard. Limited slip was an option (but not available with AdvanceTrac).
