wohoo...added mods - creature comforts

Also a great security item, they can't open the hood as easy, harder to steal the truck. Mine needs a new hood assist spring, but otherwise works great. Only thing that bugs me is that I have to have the keys out of the ign to open the hood, I guess I'll have to buy another keychain release thing.

My cable came with a grommit on it, it was just a thin one but worked. You might try Napa or a automotive paint store.

My ashtray light mount on the left side of the cover that fits to the dash and the ashtray slides on. It's a simple clip on that has a square hole to fit the clips onto.

Some of these guys don't realize how good they have it... a/c, cruise, tilt, carpet, chrome trim, power steering, power brakes. Us base model Custom guys have a lot of work just to catch up... But that's what makes it fun..

CONGRATULATIONS on quitting.
I gave them up 16 months ago myself.

The ashtray light is mounted on the top and the left of the ashtray rack. It is the only one hole there and another for the clip to secure the light socket.
The hood release cable is supposed to go to a factory provided hole for said option. It is the one nearest to the fenderwell top notch on the driver's side.

I did this conversion and it was a real job. I had the engine out and the fenders, hood and supports out. I started by cutting the masive hole for the xfer unit and missed it by about 3/8". It has to be VERY close to the fender apron/hood support area. I took measurements and ended up pretty close. After that you'll need all the controls, vents and dash from the donor.
It's a pretty involved job, but you might be able to cut the hole from inside the cab by removing the dash (you'll have to do that anyways). You can make a template from cardboard and use that to mock things up. The fit was so tight that I had to scrape off some of the rubberized undercoating that I sprayed on the fire wall in order to get the box to fit.
As a side note, I used some alum backed insulation tape from home depot (in the plumbing dept) to insulate the inside and outside of the box where it sits in the engine compartment.
The sad thing is that I'm now dealing with a leak, I've re-sealed everything and got new R134a type O rings and still have a slow leak!
Why is A/C such a PAIN!

Why get out the wrenches? Drive the 76 instead.
The hood insulation appears to be orginal, but is in tough shape (brittle and dry). I've still got to go out and buy some new upholstery clips to reinstall it. Suppose I'll look for a grommet too. I have the hood release installed and working. I was suprised how hard / far you have to pull on those suckers to get the latch mechanism to release. As for the ashtray light, I'm beginning to think it isn't an ashtray light or maybe for a different model truck. It has the blue gel with the socket spot welded to a "Z" shape bracket. I've seen where the light comes from on the ashtray holder (little rectangle), but can't seem to orient the bracket that holds the socket in a way that light would actually shine in the tray. I'm thinking of just cutting the bracket and somehow attatching the socket - just don't want to weld (to the ash tray mount) in case I ever have to change the bulb. I was thinking of velcro and soldering a ground wire to the socket?
I'd really like AC & power brakes too. It appears the brakes are easier to do. By the way, anybody know of a GOOD source for a brake pedal pad replacement? I figure Dennis Carpenter may be the way to go on that one?
I think that's the wipper and headlight light that goes to the far left of the dash bezel.
The one for the ash tray has an all metal cover and a small hole that points inside the ash tray. No plastic on this one (probably for safety reasons)
I to gave up the smokes 2 yrs ago and i use my ashtray for spare change so i'm also looking for a light. I have found most of those accessories in the local u-pull it yard here but the ashtray light seems to be the hardest to find.Wiz
