5.4 crankshaft removal

Well, I have the bottom end opened up and the crankshaft exposed. Looks like there is a front engine cover that needs to be removed and the trans would have to be moved back in order to remove the starter ring. After that, this thing can't come out?
Just would rather not have to pull the entire motor.

Yeah, the timing chain is what concerns me. I understand there are no timing marks to set up the cam timing to the crankshaft and it requires special tools?
Going to pick up a manual tonite, just no sure how much information it will contain. Some of the off the shelf manuals lack critical info.
One other note, on each side of the main journals, there is what appears to be a dowel pin of sorts. What the heck are they for?
