Thermostat option.........

I recently went to the local chain parts store and was confronted with an option for my thermostat. Now, I don't remember exactly what they were but it was in the range of either 170 or 190 deg. thermostats for my truck. I have a 390 with 4Bbl all stock. I was kind of perplexed so I am asking you all: What is the difference? I realize one runs hotter than the other but performance wise does it really matter? I live it Fl. so I went with the cooler option and now my gauge rarely goes above the 1/3 way mark. About 1/8 in. above the first line.

Thermostats usually have the temp stamped on them and if you liked the temp your truck was running before you replaced it put the same degree thermostat in.They make them different temperatures because not every vehicle or climate is the same. Also keep in mind that the cooler your engine runs the more wear and tear you put on it.I've heard you want it to run a minimum of 170 degrees.

Here in the Panhandle most folks run a 180 for year round use in older vehicles. Hotter T-stats tend to improve mileage and reduce wear but also decrease the margin for overheating. Best choice would probably be what works best in your vehicle. Much more critical in computerized FI engines.
Good Luck

i like to run my stuff a little hotter than some i use a 192 degree. i tend to agree that an engine runs more effectivly with less wear at or near 200 degrees. i was amazed at the temp that late model fuelies run and seem to run well past the 100k mark.
