E4OD Tranny questions

Hi, I'm new to this site and need a couple of questions answered. 1994 Turbo Diesel with E4OD Tranny.
I had a leak in the transmission line that went to the radiator. Fixed the line but enough tranny fluid leaked out that the truck would not move. Looked under the truck, fluid had also run out the inspection cover of the bell housing. Luckily I was close to a place where I could get fluid. Put about 1.5 gallons in. Truck would now move but fluid would just pour out the inspection cover. Seemed like it would come out faster when in park or neutral than when in gear. Put in more fluid and drove about a half mile to a friends place. By the time I got there the fluid had quit running out the cover and was working o.k., but had to put in another gallon to bring it up to the right level. Since that time I have driven approx. 400 mile with out anymore fluid coming out the inspection cover. Question: why would it leak out of the cover when it was low on fluid but stop leaking after filling and driving awhile?
Also since that happened my OD light on the shifter now blinks and tranny shifts hard. I suppose there is a code involved. Question: Is there a simple way to reset without going into a Ford dealer such as diconnectiong the batteries or something? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Disconnecting the batteries should reset your codes, but you should find out what it's trying to tell you first.
I got the code reader from Wal Mart for $35, it works well and can also be used to erase codes. Someone in this forum was talking about a way to retreive codes with a jumper wire so maybe a search is in order if this is what you want to do.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm pretty sure the code was caused by the low tranny fluid. I disconnected the batteries overnite and that worked to reset the code. Thanx.
Still don't know what caused the fluid to leak out of the bell housing pan.

It might have gotten hot when the fluid was low. After you added fluid it cooled down and the leak stopped. That is only a guess. Try and read the codes if it starts to blink again. If it is still shifting hard I would get it checked out. Something small now could turn into something big after time.
