Unhappy Tight steering box

Has anyone rebuilt their steering box? I did what the instructions told me to bleed the air from my power steering by lifting the front wheels off the ground and slowly turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine off. It seemed to work pretty good to get the air out but now the steering is tight, like I forced a bearing inside my steering box. It doesn't return to center either. What kind of luck has anyone had with rebuilts from Autozone etc? Thanks in advance!

There is a adjusting screw on the very top of the gear box. Most here use it when there is too much play in the steering.....just turn it in(CW) a 1/4 turn or so and its back to tight.

In your case I think you need to loosen the adjuster screw a bit.....loosen the lock nut and back (CCW turn) out the screw about 1/4 turn and check it........still too tight....go another 1/4 turn????

Will this help with the steering wheel centering? My bronco's steering box is a little loose and I can't wait to try this adjustment, but my steering wheel is also off center slightly, is there an adjustment to recenter it?
cheers!

Use extreme caution when adjusting the sector shaft adjustment screw on the steering box. 1/4 turns at a time until things feel right. It doesn't take much adjustment and too much in either direction can ruin the gearing permanently.

Like I said in my reply I go 1/4 turn CW (clock wise) to tighten one up.....if its real loose.....then test drive it. If the steering wheel dont self center to approximately 85-90% or so of dead straight I know I went too far and then I back off a bit.
Its key to make these adjustments in VERY small increments, and a test drive after each adjustment until you got it where you want it.

Also.....This is usually the LAST stop in getting play out of the broncos steering. I always make sure that everything else that could possibly cause play has already been checked......everything else is cool but there is still a bit of play in the wheel.....then I will go to the sector shaft.
