Question Pinto axle...

...What other vehicles used this rear end? Isn't it a 7.5"?

Do any companies offer five lug and disk brakes for it?

Thanks,
Eric

Might be a 7.

A switch to an 8" would better serve any performance upgrade. Stainless Steel Brakes might make a kit for the 8.

One other thing, is this a stout piece? I'm thinking of putting it under my rx7 and want to make sure before I get too far into it.

I have seen Mavericks with disc brakes in the back, that might be a better choice. If you are thinking about something narrow for an RX-7 I do not see why you do not use an 80s Ranger axle. Much more support for that including lockers and limited slips.

This already has a full spool in it with 3.55 gears. Just wondering about strength as I'm going to be building a high power 1.1 or 1.3.

I had an 8" open diff in a Mustang with a 289 and manual trans. 3.0 gears and it held up after I broke the 2.79s.

Go here for 8" goodies:

scroll down for the 8's

An 8.8 from a later Ranger or Exploder, if it will fit, might also be considered.

I've read about the 8.8 but they are heavy compaired to the original, everybody I've talked to used the 8.8 on high hp vehicles ie 400+; as I'm only looking for about 250-275. I'll check those sights though. thatnks.

If it's related to the 7.5" they used in Mustangs and Thunderbirds in the '90s, it's not that stout at all.

The turbo t-bird rear seemed to hold up well to the power they made. I would also say look at a Maverick Grabber rear. or perhaps a 70s shelby cobra rear (hopped up mustang 2).

When I said Ranger/Bronco I meant the 7.5 rear end. It should hold up fine and depending where you live you can buy them from $25 to $100 because, generally, people do not want them. It is probably good for 200 horsepower.

Turbo T bird should be an 8.8, shouldn't it?

The Maverick and Mustang 2 would be 8" diffs.

I doubt you'd tear it up; Wankel (rotary) engines aren't known for a lot of torque, and you're talking a light car. Of course, the bigger the better!

FLgargoyle makes a point. What kills a differential is shock load from a high-traction launch, or otherwise. As long as you're not running large drag slicks and launching at 9k, a reconditioned 7.5 will probably last for a while.

Thanks Jay, I'm going to autoX the car, the tires will be slicks but of the circle track variety on 13" stockers.
